In the 1950s, H. A. “Lindy” Slone began managing Hudler-Moore lumber yards in the South Houston area. In November 1962, he and his wife, Ola Mae, bought the location in Alta Loma and founded Slone Lumber Company. They began with one employee, Mr. Houston Walker, who remained with them for 27 years until his retirement. The company functioned as a local lumber yard and hardware store. With their small business growing, the Slones incorporated in February, 1964, to form Slone Lumber Company Inc., including their son Adonn and daughter Linda Sue as shareholders. Lindy and fellow businessmen organized the Alta Loma Merchant's Association which would grow into the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce.

 

After graduating from Texas A&M University in 1960, Adonn served twenty years in the United States Marine Corps. Upon his retirement in 1980, he and wife, Mary Helen, moved with their two boys, Glenn and Gregg, to Santa Fe to join the family business. Together they transitioned the company from a local lumber yard to a supplier for professional builders. Throughout his career, Adonn served as president of both the Lumbermen's Association of Texas and Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce in addition to serving several years on the Santa Fe Planning and Zoning Commission. He volunteered his free-time flying for Air Life Line and Angel Flight, and created an award to recognize first-responders.

 

Gregg Slone gained experience in high school doing everything from working the sales counter to cleaning the yard. If there's a job that gets done around here, he's done it. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1987 and began his career at Slone Lumber in the sales department. The scope of the business was expanded to include door unit assembly, door installation, and the sale of cabinets and custom doors. With the help of wife, Camille, Slone Lumber Company became a leading custom building supplier of Galveston County. In 2015, a national supplier purchased certain parts of the Slone assets and assumed control, with Gregg remaining as General Manager. After buying out another local yard that same year, the Santa Fe location was shuttered. The Slones took this opportunity to pursue other interests. That was until a former customer reached out to ask if they'd go back into business. Gregg agreed for that one customer, but it wasn't long before others heard that Slone was back up and running. As more and more calls came in, he began phoning former employees to ask if they'd be interested in returning. 

 

It was around that time that Gregg's son, Cameron, called him. Cameron had grown up at the yard with his siblings, playing with door hardware as a little kid, sweeping gravel as a teenager, and riding along in trucks during college summers. He was now a Junior at Texas A&M University, and he told his dad he felt like he was being called back to the family business. Gregg and Camille drove all the way to College Station to make sure he and his fiancée, Lauren, knew what they were getting into. Cameron changed his major to industrial distribution, and joined the company upon graduation in 2018. Gregg had his son take the time to work in every department so he would know the business inside and out. He now serves as Vice President while Lauren works in HR and marketing. They are proud to represent the fourth generation of what has evolved into Slone Building Supply.
